Archos GPS In Car Holder for 605 Wi Fi Holder Only

The new ARCHOS GPS In-Car Holder turns the award-winning 605 WiFi portable media player (PMP) into a full-fledged portable navigation system. With more than 50 times the hard drive size, twice the screen resolution, and similar pricing as stand-alone GPS navigation products, the ARCHOS 605 GPS is the ultimate navigation and entertainment device. The ARCHOS 605 WiFi snaps easily into the GPS In-Car Holder, which is connected to the car windshield and stereo system, creating a full voice and video navigation system. Unlike GPS-only devices, consumers can easily navigate their way on the clearest, sharpest 4.3″ screen, and then watch favorite videos or recorded TV shows, listen to music and view photo slideshows once they arrive. 2 Stars No way, Jose!
Archos 605 WiFi itself is a good product, but don’t expect to get a good GPS out of this In-Car Holder! I’ve tested quite a number of different GPS models, and want to warn you – this Archos GPS, well put it simply, sucks, and here is why:
- Can not play music while in GPS mode (which kills the whole purpose of adding GPS to a PMP player);
- Inaccurate road instructions;
- Minimal GPS functionality;
- Awkward unit-to-holder connections
- Sound from an internal speaker keeps coming out even when connected to audio output line;
- Not very user friendly GPS software;
- Need more? Get it – I am sure you will find some more …
2 Stars Poor route calculation
Starting with the positives:
1. Nice display on 605 wifi
2. Holder works well
Negatives (*and these may possibly all be resolved with software updates):
1. Poor route calculation. Some suggested turns make no sense (e.g., turning off a street, adding distance on a different street, only to come back to the original street)
2. Takes a long time to launch GPS program
3. Difficult to navigate the menus
4. When using POI’s (points of interest), cannot check the location of POI’s with the same name before calculating a route (e.g., multiple Home Depot locations — Which town is being targeted for the one that is selected?)
5. Cannot see the distance to a POI before calculating a route
6. Difficult to edit a via
5 Stars GPS makes Archos 605 excellent PMP system
I have been a big fan of Archos products –owning the 604 PMP and now the 605 wi-fi PMP. When I learned that GPS would become available I checked everyday until I saw the GPS holder for sale on AMAZON. As a PMP the 605 is superb with hi-resolution touchscreen & excellent for carrying mp3,tv shows, movies & podcasts. When I received the GPS unit I was up & running within 15 minutes. The GPS holder/bracket houses the GPS electronics,DC power & easily & firmly attaches to the windshield every time. The maps are crisp & sharp & very easy to read on the big screen. The voice commands are clear & the whole system is very accurate & intuitive. The voice commands do not give street names but tell you there will be a right turn in 500 yards and then both the voice & screen count down to the turn. I have not owned a GPS unit before but I would recommend this Archos to anyone. When you are not driving you can watch video or listen to great audio. I have a DISH satellite system & the 605 unit is fully compatible so you can do a USB transfer of several shows from the DISH DVR to the portable unit in a few minutes
4 Stars Good if you live in the right country
I think this is a very good product with the exception of where you live or where you want to use it, for me I don’t know if I will ever use it since I can’t find any maps for the Middle East, another problem I faced is that I received the package missing the main cable needed to connect the Archos device to the GPS holder and now for me I have to buy another one as the cable is not sold separately Amazon refunded 20% to my account but still I am the one who lost
5 Stars Another fantastic addition to a device already abundant in features
This Archos GPS car dock is actually meant to be compatible with future models in addition ot the 605, and includes grips for the upcoming models. It does a great job of adding thorough GPS functionality to the Archos 605. Installing the GPS software from the installation DVD onto the 605 is easy. You can also get traffic signal camera locations from an update on the Archos website. This GPS also incorporates real-time traffic into it’s routing if you use the included TMC antenna and you get that info broadcast in your area. It has a built-in speaker so it doesn’t rely on the 605s tiny speaker, but you can also use the line-out to your car stereo. It has all the features you’d expect from a standalone GPS. I commend Archos for continuing to add value to its products instead abandoning them for the new models — the 605 is alread a DVR, a great media player, and a web browser. If you’re thinking about getting a 605, keep in mind there’s also a version already bundled with the GPS car dock.
